Family guide

For grandparents, aunts and uncles, and family friends. Someone — a parent or the coach — sends you a code, and you can watch the score from wherever you are, live, as it happens.

This is the simplest way to use RinkTally. You don't track anything, you can't change anything, and there's nothing to set up beyond the code. Following is free and stays free.

Getting started

You need a code or a link

Most of the time you'll be sent a link — tap it and it does the rest. If you get the code on its own it looks like ABCD-2345, eight characters. Only the player's parent or their coach can make one, so if you don't have it, ask them; there's no way to search for a player or a team.

A coach can also share one code for the whole team. That works exactly the same for you — you just see the team's games rather than one player's.

You don't need an account

Install RinkTally, open it, and choose Just here to watch a game?— no email, no code from your inbox, no password. Enter the follow code and you're watching. If you tapped a link, the code is already filled in.

The catch is worth knowing: an account made this way lives only on that phone. Lose it or reinstall the app and there's no way to get back to what you were following, because we have no idea who you are. Adding your email in Settings at any point fixes that, and you keep everything you were already following.

You can also sign in properly from the start — with Apple, with Google, or with a one-time code emailed to you. Same result, and nothing to lose later.

Entering a code by hand

Choose Follow a Playerand type it — the hyphen is added for you and it's not case-sensitive. You'll land on a screen showing who you're following and their team.

If it won't take, the app will tell you why: the code was typed wrong, it expired, it was turned off, or it's been used the maximum number of times. In every case the fix is to ask for a new one. After ten wrong attempts you'll be asked to wait about fifteen minutes.

Watching games

While the game is on

When the coach starts tracking, a Live Nowcard appears on your home screen on its own — you don't need to have the app open or refresh anything. Tap it for the full feed:

The score, which period they're in, shots on goal for both teams, and every goal as it goes in, with who scored and who assisted. It updates within a second or two of the coach tapping.

After the game

The card turns into the final score, and recent games stay listed so you can catch up on one you missed. Tap any of them to see how the goals went in.

What you can't see

The roster, the schedule, other players' stats, and anything the parent tracks privately. You see the game and the player you follow — nothing else about the team or the other children on it.

Following more than one

Two grandchildren on different teams? Three? There's no limit. Tap Follow another player on your home screen and enter another code.

Each player needs their own codefrom their own parent or coach — following one child doesn't give you access to their teammates or siblings.

When more than one of them is playing at the same time, both appear under Live Now and you can move between the two games.

Season stats Paid

Open a player and you'll see their recent game scores, free. Below that is their season: games played, goals, assists, points, and how they did in each game. That part needs a subscription.

Games your player missed aren't counted — a game they weren't at won't show up as a game where they didn't score.

If you have a coupon code from a club or association, enter it under Have a code? on the upgrade screen.

If the player is your own child

Following is read-only, but if you're the parent you probably want more than that — your own stat tracking, season trends, and a say in what the coach can see.

On your home screen, tap Is one of these your child?, pick them from the roster, and the coach gets a request to link you. Once they approve, RinkTally moves you over to the parent experience on its own.

You'll need to add your email first. Being linked to a child means holding their stats, and that shouldn't rest on an account that disappears with the phone. The coach approves rather than it being automatic, because a follow code can be passed around and only the coach actually knows who the parents are.

Stopping

Open a player and tap Stop following — anyone else you follow is unaffected. To leave entirely, use Settings → Stop following everyone.

The parent or coach can also remove you, or turn off the code you used. If the games stop appearing, that's the likely reason — ask them for a new code.

Your account

Settings holds your email address, your plan, sign-out and account deletion. Deleting your account is permanent and doesn't cancel a subscription — cancel that in the App Store or Play Store first.
