Youth Hockey Goalie Stats: What to Track and What They Mean
Updated October 2026
For goalie parents and coaches, the four youth goalie stats worth tracking are shots against, save percentage, goals-against average and rebound percentage. Goalie tracking and goalie stats are free in RinkTally on iPhone and Android.
Which goalie stats matter for youth hockey?
Four stats tell the story: shots against, save percentage, goals-against average, and rebound percentage. Together they show how the goalie performed.
Shots against
Shots against is the number of shots the goalie faced. This number gives context for everything else — a goalie who faced 30 shots had a busier night than one who faced 10.
Save percentage
Save percentage is saves divided by shots against. The percentage of shots the goalie stopped. If the goalie faced 20 shots and stopped 18, that's a .900 save percentage (90%).
Goals-against average
Goals-against average is the average number of goals allowed per game, adjusted for game length. The average number of goals the goalie allowed per game. Lower is better. This stat accounts for game length.
Rebound percentage
Rebound percentage is how often a save gives up a rebound. How often saves give up a rebound. A save with a rebound means the puck came back into play and the other team got another chance. Lower rebound percentages mean the goalie controlled more shots.
Tagging how goals happen
Optional goal tags help show how goals happen: Shot, Deke, Breakaway, Rebound, Screen, and more. Tags add context to the final score.
Goalie shot maps
Shot maps show where shots came from on a half-rink diagram. Shots appear as circles and goals as diamonds. Shot maps are always free for a goalie's shots against. In-net shot maps never use up one of the three free shot-map games.
Tracking a goalie with RinkTally (free)
Three taps per shot: Save, Save + Rebound, Goal Against. Undo is there for mis-taps, and the app works with no signal and syncs later.
Coaches can change goalies mid-game and mark an empty net. If you change goalies, keep each goalie's numbers separate and note when the change happened. Learn more about how coaches track a game.
Recaps show the jersey number only, not children's names.
Goalie tracking and goalie stats are free. Parents and coaches can track their own player on their own. Learn more about solo tracking and parent tracking.
Keep the numbers in context
At young ages, team defence affects goalie numbers. A goalie facing many breakaways or screens will have different stats than one behind a strong defence. The stats still matter — they show what happened — but the full story includes the team in front of the net.
