How to Track Youth Hockey Stats During a Game (When You're Also Coaching)
Updated October 2026
Youth hockey coaches can track game stats from the bench by tapping each goal and shot on a phone as it happens, then adding faceoffs and penalties once that feels easy. RinkTally does this for free on iPhone and Android, and season totals build from your taps.
What stats should a youth hockey coach track?
Start with the essentials: goals, shots, faceoffs, and penalties. That gives you a complete picture of the game without overwhelming whoever's recording it.
Goalie tracking — saves, saves with rebounds, and goals against — tells the story from the other end of the ice. Optional goal tags like Shot, Deke, Breakaway, Rebound, and Screen help show how goals happen.
Keep it simple during the game
Pick a few stats you can track reliably. Once those feel easy, add more. Starting simple means you'll actually keep tracking through the third period instead of giving up halfway through the second. If you're still using a paper scoresheet, the same advice applies.
Tracking stats on your phone with RinkTally
RinkTally turns any phone into a live stat bench. One tap per event — goal, shot, faceoff, penalty — and the totals build as you go. Undo fixes a mis-tap, and there's a Recent list if you miss the undo window.
Before the game, set up your team and roster. Name and jersey number are all you need — position is optional. Each game needs an opponent. Location, home/away, and date/time are optional, but scheduling ahead means the Start Tracking button arrives pre-filled.
Simple mode or Advanced mode
Simple mode tracks goals and shots. Advanced mode adds faceoffs and penalties. You can switch between them mid-game, so start with Simple if you're not sure.
Periods, overtime, and shootouts
End Period moves you on. After the third, if the game is tied, you get the option to start overtime or a shootout. A shootout is tracked round by round: pick the shooter, then tap Goal or Miss.
When the rink has no signal
Keep tracking. The header shows Synced, Syncing, Offline, or a count of pending events. Everything stores on your phone and syncs later. This is useful in rinks with poor reception — you don't need bars to record the game.
After the final horn: sharing the recap
The recap shows the final score, shots, faceoffs, penalties, and a goal-by-goal list. Share the score and stats as a picture — it uses jersey numbers only, not children's names. You can add notes to recaps, and you can add a past session if you forgot to start tracking.
Get help on the bench from parents
You can invite parents and family to share the load. Parents can track their own player separately from yours, and family can follow the live score. Learn more about parent tracking and family following.
